10 Unexpected Ways To Arrange Wall Art

One of my major pet peeves is askew artwork, which is why I have yet to tackle a large collection in my own home.  But these 10 art arrangements go way beyond the average gallery wall and bring so much interest that they've got me overwhelmed with inspiration (like the way I get the second I step foot in Anthropologie) and ideas are currently whirling in my head of how to recreate these amazing art walls in my home.  If you are in the need of some dimension and texture in your space then read on for 10 unexpected ways to arrange wall art in your home.

Wall Art Arrangement1. Lean Wall Art On The Floor

Layering several different sized pieces of art on the floor will add depth to the collection and draw the eye down, which is great for spaces with high ceilings that you want to give a cozier feel.  Just be sure to keep everything else in the room at a lower level so the artwork doesn't get lost. Wall Art Arrangement2. Layer Wall Art On Bookshelves

I love the idea of displaying wall art on shelves or a bookcase that is the same color as the wall.  It adds depth to the grouping while still allowing the artwork to shine, and enables you to easily rearrange and include decorative accessories for an interesting yet casual display. Wall Art Arrangement3. Arrange Wall Art Around An Architectural Detail

Hanging artwork around an interesting detail, whether it's a staircase or an arched doorway, accentuates the architecture and creates a dynamic display full of movement.  (image by Pia Winther)

Wall Art Arrangement4. Arrange Wall Art On Picture Ledges

Similar to the bookshelf idea, displaying artwork on shallow ledges creates a casual display that allows for layering and adds texture to the wall. (image via Ems Designblogg

Wall Art Arrangement5. Hang Unframed Art Prints From A Wire

I like the juxtaposition of the orderliness of the arrangement with the carefree feel of the unframed artwork.  As a bonus try layering additional artwork and decor below the hanging prints. (image via Fantastic Frank)

Wall Art Arrangement6. Hang Artwork In An Asymmetrical Grouping

There are so many things I love about this gallery wall.  Its asymmetry is so dynamic, and the arrangement creates so much movement yet remains grounded by the few pieces displayed on the floor.  The way the wall art is hung from floor to ceiling adds height and the chair becomes a piece of art itself adding depth to the collection.   (image via Dwell)

Wall Art Arrangement7. Hang Wall Art Around The Outside Of A Corner

Hanging artwork around a corner moves you through the space and adds another dimension to the display.  It could also be a great way to draw your eye toward a focal point. (image via Inside Out)

Wall Art Arrangement8. Hang Wall Art Around The Inside Of A Corner

This has the opposite effect of #7.  Instead of moving you through a space it really draws you into the art wall and adds great depth to the collection.  I also love the way the sculptural wire chair becomes a part of the arrangement as well. (image via Wit an Delight)

Wall Art Arrangement9. Display Art On Corner Picture Ledges

This combination of #4 and #8 is so textural and brings so much depth to the arrangement.  The casual display of the artwork and the way the multiple dimensions absorbs the viewer makes it feel warm and inviting, especially when filled with personal photographs.  (image via Country Living)

Wall Art Arrangement10. Create Balance With Different Sized Wall Art

The oversized painting is so large that it could really stand on its own, but the addition of the smaller prints to the left creates a calming balance to such a graphic piece and adds texture to an otherwise minimalist display. (image via The Design Files)
