10 Essentials For A Basic Toolbox

Growing up as an avid DIYer I never realized how lucky I was to have my dad’s extensive tool collection right at my fingertips.  Thankfully when I moved away from home I inherited my Grandad’s toolbox full of all the basics to get my own collection started.  Whether you are ready to tackle a DIY coffee table, or just have a few pictures to hang, a basic set of tools is essential for any home.  Below are 10 versatile tools that will help you through a wide variety of household tasks and DIY projects.

Hammer

A small hammer is handy for hanging lightweight artwork that only needs a single nail.

Screwdrivers

Get both a philips and a flathead in various sizes for assembling furniture, hanging shelves and curtain rods, removing switch plates, opening paint cans, replacing drawer pulls, and the list goes on.

Stud Finder

A stud finder is a must-have for finding studs to securely hang shelving and heavy artwork.

Level

Crucial when hanging artwork and shelving.

Cordless Drill (with various bits)

Makes hanging shelves and curtain rods much easier, especially if you are drilling into a stud.  Also nice to have for any woodworking projects.

Tape Measure

A necessity when shopping for furniture, and DIY projects.

Adjustable Crescent Wrench

Used for tightening and loosening nuts and bolts of various sizes.

Allen Wrench Set

You have probably seen these included in most boxes from IKEA.  Mainly used for assembling furniture.

Slip Joint Pliers

Used for gripping bolts, cutting wire, and bending wire and metal.

Box Cutter

Safer than scissors for opening boxes.

Although there are sooo many more tools out there to help with specific jobs, these 10 items are a great jumping off point.  What tools do you have that you can't live without?
